The 2023 Typefi User Conference was held at the Kimpton Hotel Palomar in Philadelphia, PA on 27 September 2023. Attendees from 15 organisations joined Typefi staff for a day of informative presentations and lively interactive sessions.

The day began with a product update covering what we’ve done in the past year—including more than 200 improvements to the core Typefi product—as well as our next steps. Keep an eye out for the launch of Typefi 9 in 2024 along with our new web-based collaboration and workflow management tool known as Marcoola!

Following the product update, we heard a case study from American Petroleum Institute which revealed how Typefi helped this organisation cut proofing time in half and produce a record number of standards in 2022.

After a quick coffee break, we returned to see some sneak peeks and live demos of new Writer features, Oxygen and Fonto integrations, a new Sharepoint export option in Typefi Server, and new capabilities around generating HTML from your content.

Next up was a case study from IGI Global which covered the many iterations of publishing systems at IGI and why Typefi was ultimately the best choice. IGI is now producing 4x more books annually than they were prior to Typefi!

After a delicious lunch break, we broke into groups for roundtable discussions with Typefi consultants and product managers. This was a sort of “Ask Me Anything” session for clients and prospects to ask our team specific questions about their unique publishing challenges. This is always a favourite session, and the conversations ran well into the afternoon.

Once the roundtable session wrapped up, we learned about the Typefi website redevelopment project. Web design agency DesignHammer discussed the project and gave some insight into the overall strategy and the development process.

We wrapped up the day with another lively interactive session. This time, we broke into groups with people we hadn’t talked to already and discussed the important questions—like what animal you think Typefi is, and what features you want to see next. This session was a highlight of the day with lots of laughs and plenty of good discussions. Keep an eye out for some of your feature requests in the near future.

Typefi has been busy lately and there are a lot of new developments coming soon! We've added new partnerships with Fonto and oXygen Web Author, and a new partnership with Recosoft is coming soon. Typefi Server saw more than 200 improvements over the last year. A new Engine Advanced platform and On-Demand Engines are coming early in 2024. Typefi 9 is nearing its debut as well. Case study: American Petroleum Institute

American Petroleum Institute publishes standards for the oil and gas industry. For years, production was slow due to inconsistent authoring and outsourced editing. Now with a new workflow using Typefi and eXtyles, production time has decreased drastically, proofing time was cut in half, and a record number of documents were published in 2022.

Case study: IGI Global

IGI Global first starting using Typefi 4 back in 2008. The initial implementation brought some big benefits, but didn't solve every challenge. IGI finally decided to upgrade to Typefi 8 in 2023. With this upgrade, everything that the team at IGI was previously doing in-house can now be done out of the box using Typefi. The new Typefi website

The old Typefi website had its issues. The team knew that it could be greatly improved and engaged with web agency DesignHammer to undergo a complete rebuild of the website. For nearly 2 years, The Typefi team met with DesignHammer to agree on project goals, target audiences, and solutions to solve the challenges of the old website. Chandi Perera

Chandi joined Typefi in 2006, and has over two decades of publishing and media technology experience. He has acted as a technology consultant to corporations and government agencies around the world, and is a frequent conference speaker in the areas of content management, publishing, media, XML, structured content and digital rights management. Chandi is a board member of a number of industry bodies and has degrees in Engineering and Computer Science.

Caleb Clauset

Caleb drives the vision and strategy for Typefi’s products, and cultivates strategic partnerships with developers to extend Typefi’s core capabilities. He is an award-winning designer and Adobe Certified Expert in InDesign with over a decade’s experience designing, developing and implementing publishing technology. He holds a Master of Graphic Design from North Carolina State University and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Guy van der Kolk

Guy first got hooked on publishing while attending an international school in Ivory Coast, where he used Pagemaker, Photoshop and an Apple Quicktake 100 camera to help create the yearbook. After many hours of hard work, while holding the final printed product, he knew this was an industry he wanted to be a part of.

Having spent the first 17 years of his life in West Africa, Guy is fluent in three languages and has a multicultural background that has served him well in his career. As an IT consultant and trainer for an Apple Premium reseller and then as a Senior Solutions Consultant for Typefi, he has trained thousands of people to get the most out of their software.

In 2020, Guy moved into the role of Typefi Product Manager, working with the product and engineering teams to continue to improve on our world-leading publishing software and bring you exciting new features. He continues to apply his deep product knowledge in a Professional Services capacity, working on projects with new and current customers.

Jason Mitchell

Jason leads Typefi’s global Professional Services team and has over 15 years of experience in managing publishing operations and digital products for both small and large publishing houses. He has successfully led teams to redefine the publishing process to include digital products and improve profitability in the travel and medical publishing sectors.
